June week no.1 review

A button-cool lady with a pocket full of hits------There is nothing remotely fish or cheer-esque about Penny, the malaysian born composer singer who conquered the music scene with her 2000 debut(but best well known for her metor garden theme song ni yao de ai) In fact, she does something rarely seen from female singer in the market: write or co-write all her material. On her 8th solo album, Penny is once again a story teller; her song are narratives set to music, albeit mostly ones that concern love. Her supple, lightly twangy vocals fit the album's lilting melodies(most of the slick, radio friendly instrumentation here is purely functional), and her sentiments, though sometimes naive, are refreshingly age-appropriate. When she sings about herself, she sounds like an real rocker. For now, her primary fan base will probably remain those who really appreciate her music style and those who connects with her picturesque-lyrics

4/5 stars

Being a composer-singer doesn't exactly help one's artistic cred. But after compromising with the continuously downfall music industry, Xiao Hong Ren proves that he hasn't lost his creative mojo. This man named Fucker, his 2nd solo album, finds the R&B/ rockie singer in fine formed, whether he's playing the rascal or the love ballads, taking it to the honky-tonk with humorous lyrics. When he's singing about love on wo mei you cuo or getting cheeky on ai de hei gou xiong, his thick baritone can also make him one sexy dude!!!
