10)The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas- Harrowing yet beautiful drama about a German lad befriending, across the wires, a concentration camp inmate. A heart-wrenching final sequence which u cant be prepared for.
9)The Hangover- 2009's runaway comedy sensation married' 80s spunk with bromance banter and Vegas, baby. Hilarious. Oh did i mention that Bradley Cooper is damn HOT !!!!
8)Milk- Sean Pann secured Oscar No 2 for his affectionate, firm central turn as the heart of a celebratory biopic. The candle-lit funeral procession, a show of how many lives Milk had touched.
7)The Reader- I know, it was released in 2008, but my lists go with local release date, and it would be criminal to leave out this wrenching exploration of guilt and atonement. Kate Winslet's Hanna Schmitz was her best performance i had seen so far.
6)The September Issue- Those hoping this behind-the-sheen documentary would reveal the real "Miranda Priestly" as a far greater beast are in for a rude shock, as introverted yet single-minded Wintour gives little away.
5)Gran Torino- Part parody, part revision, all Clint Eastwood, as he turns a retired racist into an unlikely cultural vigilante.
4)Star Trek- So many great scenes were packed into this excellent Star Trek reboot. J.J.Abrams went beyond pleasing Trekkers, he made the franchise cool and accessible once again.
3)500 Days Of Summer- He's into her way more than she's into him. We all know the story. Some of us have even lived it. But the charm of this alterna-rom-com is how it both embraces and subverts the genre's cliches.
2)The Hurt Locker- Bomb disposal is one of the great staples of war movies, but it has never been depicted in such terrifying detail as it is here. In this perfectly honed drama speaks the addictive attractions of risk and violence.
1)District 9- A sleeper smash-hit ! This sci-fi pic is a clever parable about the price of racial prejudice, but what really struck me abt it was how the special effects served the story, rather than the other way round. If Aliens is good, then District 9 should amaze u, mentally and visually.Best Animation of 2009
Up- A rickety house takes flight, airborne by hundreds of colourful balloons. Contractually obliged to not fail, Pixar again take a ker-razy idea and turn it into sophisticated joy.Best Chinese movie of 2009
